In 1984 the brothers William and Jim Reid formed with Douglas Hart and Murray Dalglish the Jesus and Mary Chain. Dalglish will be replaced by Bobby Gillespie and J & MC moved to London to sign with Alan McGee’s Creation Records, releasing the single “Upside Down”. Are introduced to London audiences for their energetic shows, which often end in a brawl, during which their backs to the public.
The following “You trip me up” perfected their formula, while their debut album Psychocandy (1985) proposes a new formula of pop songs made backgrounds of distorted guitars, a sound that became their trademark.
Two years later, the band returns with a new drummer (Bobby Gillespie in the meantime he left to found Primal Scream) and public Darklands, a dramatic turn that leads them into a song form more skeletal and less energetic.
Resurface in 1989 with AUTOMATIC marking their shift from classical to electronic battery. After a long absence, in 1992, Douglas Hart and not recur with the new album: HONEY’S DEAD. The first single, “Reverence” is banned from Top of the pops for the phrase: “I want to die like Jesus Christ / I want to die like JFK.”
In 1994, with the hard sound STONED AND Dethroned, climb the U.S. charts with the single “Sometimes Always.”
After the single “Hate Rock ‘n’ roll” in 1998, signed to Sub Pop and publish Munk.
William Reid left the band, which dissolved the following year.
In 2006, the band returns to public attention with five republication: to accompany each issue of the “classics” of the Scottish group is a DVD with three videos.
During 2007 the group – together – it sounds for some live events and announces the return with a new album. On 18 March 2008 creates a new version of the song “All Things Must Pass” – song already written ten years earlier – for the soundtrack of the TV show “Heroes”
