Born in Paris in 1978, Yael Naim lived most of her childhood in Ramat Hacharon, a small town near Tel Aviv. Her Tunisian parents went there to live when she was 4. “I remember there was a small organ in which rested my fingers. My interest in the instrument was so obvious that one day I came home from school and found a piano in my room. ”
In his fondness for the piano was followed 10 years of conservatory. “After seeing the movie Amadeus, all I wanted to do was to write symphonies.”
Her idyll with classical music led him to discover other sounds. “At home my father laid discs Beatles Sgt Peppers and so discovered and Abbey Road at the age of 12. And I forgot my classical ambitions. “
Yael began composing songs which helped him overcome his shyness. Upon reaching adolescence she discovered a voice and sought a vocal clarity by listening to Aretha Franklin . With 18 years came to Joni Mitchell and began to pay more attention to the lyrics.
At a club in Tel Aviv she met Wynton Marsalis musicians and joined them in an impromptu performance. His passion for music has no boundaries and was always willing to experiment and learn new things. Even his way through the military service (to which all women are obligated in Israel), has reduced his interest in music and even at that time formed a group called The Anti Collision who came to perform in clubs around the country.
An invitation to a benefit concert took him to Paris in 2000 and from there things started to work. Some producers attended the concert and 4 days later signed a contract with EMI. His name began to circulate after the film director Elie Chrouraqui asked to play a role in the movie “Ten commandments” to later offer to write the film’s original song, “Harrison’s flowers.”
His first album “In a man’s womb”, recorded between Paris and Los Angeles, was published in 2001. However, it was a misstep. “It was a huge disappointment because I gave it everything. I lost a lot of confidence in myself that led me to question everything. ” So the young golden-voiced singer was in a period of disillusionment with the release of his album, the end of a relationship and a career that required him to seek additional work to survive (the musical Gladiator)
In 2004 Yael met David Donatien, who was playing with a mutual friend. David was a drummer of the West Indies had 15 years working with an extraordinary variety of people, from Bernard Lavilliers the electronic musician Junior Jack, showing great versatility with the instruments. His talent and imagination caused the universe to be renewed Yael literally, giving an address and a particular aesthetic to their music. David also encouraged Yael to sing in Hebrew, something she had always rejected. Their complicity is such that now they prefer to present as a group.
The first steps in preparing the new album exclusively focused on vocals and guitar. But little by little Yael and David began to dig into the sound and formed a team. The duo joined a group of French musicians of the first row with the help of engineer S. Husky Huskolds ( Tom Waits , Fiona Apple, Me’Shell Ndegeocello).
The instrumentation is hauntingly minimalist, but also provides a multitude of colors and sounds with the participation of a horn section, the Mellotron, the cello and various schedules.
Recorded in Yael’s apartment in Paris, the 13 songs of joy pass (Endless song of happiness) to melancholy (Paris, Lonely). Some of them like surf Lachlom Yashanto or others like Baboker dreams and seek serenity found at the end of the day. The surprise is the amazing version of “Toxi” of Britney Spears .
Listening to these little gems reminiscent of Tori Amos or Fiona Apple. However, despite recognizing their sources of inspiration, Yael Naim, has been able to build your own sound. It’s actually quite amazing to discover how something familiar can seduce our ears with a beauty so original. Perhaps it is the freshness exhaled by this young artist who discovers in “New Soul”, “A new soul in this strange world, hoping to learn a little.” . “When I was young I really thought it was an old soul reincarnated and I can say that even this gave me a sense of superiority over others .. But then I did everything the wrong way and concluded that it was my first experience and should be more humble. ”
